NeverToss

The best pantry inventory app in 2026

We compared every real option on the US App Store, with their actual ratings. The short version: pick based on how much list-keeping you'll honestly do. One of these apps is ours, and we'll tell you when we get to it.

Which pantry inventory app is best?

  • You like keeping lists: Pantry Check or NoWaste.
  • You want recipes from what you own: Cooklist.
  • You want to scan barcodes for expiry dates: BEEP.
  • You want the tracking done for you: that's NeverToss, our own app. It's brand new — early access is rolling out through the waitlist — so it has no rating history yet.

Every real option, with real numbers

Ratings are from the US App Store, pulled July 2026, and nothing in pure pantry tracking has cracked 2,000 of them. One column matters more than the stars, though: upkeep. It decides whether you're still using the app in a month.

Pantry Check

4.51★ · 1,552 ratings · since 2015

The steadiest list-keeper in the category. Inventory plus grocery lists, barcode scanning, and household sharing. It's been maintained for a decade, which counts for a lot here.

Best if you'll actually maintain the list.

NoWaste

4.15★ · 746 ratings · since 2014

Lists for fridge, freezer and pantry with several ways to add items, including barcodes and receipts. The free tier caps at 6 lists and 500 items. It's grown a lot of features on an old core, and the 4.15 average shows it. More in our NoWaste alternative guide.

Best for freezer-heavy households on the free tier.

Cooklist

4.73★ · 11,215 ratings · since 2018

The biggest app on this page by far, because it's really a recipe app. It connects to store loyalty accounts, builds a pantry from your purchases, and suggests meals you can cook right now. Expiry tracking is not the focus.

Best if "what can I cook tonight?" is your main question.

BEEP

4.14★ · 236 ratings · since 2017

Scan a product's barcode, type the date on the package, and BEEP reminds you before it passes. Focused and simple. You do the typing, and packaged goods are its home turf. Loose produce, not so much.

Best for a packaged-goods-heavy pantry.

FridgeBuddy & Panzy

4.54★ · 198 · and 4.60★ · 97 ratings

Two smaller list-keepers with happy users and tiny communities. Fine apps. With this few ratings you're betting on continued maintenance.

Fine picks if you're okay with a small bet.

Why do people quit pantry apps?

Every app above depends on you updating a list. Scan things in when you shop, tick things off when you cook, adjust when you toss. Week one goes great. Week three, the list has drifted from reality, and an inventory that's wrong is worse than no inventory. If you've quit one of these apps before, that's almost certainly why. It wasn't you.

Is there one that skips the manual upkeep?

NeverToss is our answer to the upkeep problem. You scan your grocery receipt once, and the app takes it from there. It figures out what you bought, gives each item a shelf-life window, and tells you what to use first. Every date is an estimate and the app says so. If one's wrong, you fix it with a tap.

It's an iOS app in early access — invites are rolling out through the waitlist below. It's also brand new, which is why it carries no rating history in the table above.

Whichever app you pick, knowing how long things actually keep does half the work. Our fridge storage chart covers that.
