NeverToss

Looking for a NoWaste alternative?

NoWaste is one of the better food inventory apps, and it's been around since 2014. If it isn't sticking for you, the reason is usually the list upkeep, not the app. Here's an honest look at your options, including our own.

What does NoWaste do well?

NoWaste keeps inventory lists for your fridge, freezer and pantry, and gives you several ways to add food — barcodes, receipts, photos, or picking from its item library. It syncs across devices and sorts by expiration date. For freezer tracking especially, it's earned its decade of users.

Why do people look for an alternative?

  • The list is yours to maintain. Add items when you shop, remove them when you cook. Skip a week and the inventory stops matching your kitchen. That's the point where most people quit.
  • Dates are mostly on you. You set or confirm expiry dates item by item. The scanning helps you add things faster, but the thinking is still your job.
  • The free tier has walls. 6 lists and 500 items, with the bigger scanner database behind the Pro subscription.
  • It shows its age. A 4.15 average after twelve years says users respect it more than they love it.

What should you use instead?

Pantry Check — the closest like-for-like swap

Same manual-list model, more polish, better ratings (4.51★, 1,552 ratings), plus grocery lists and household sharing. If you like NoWaste's approach and just want a smoother version of it, this is the move.

Cooklist — if the goal is dinner, not lists

Cooklist (4.73★, 11,215 ratings) builds a pantry from connected store accounts and suggests recipes you can cook right now. Weak on expiry tracking, strong on "what do I make tonight?"

BEEP — if you mostly track packaged goods

BEEP (4.14★, 236 ratings) scans barcodes and reminds you before the date you typed in passes. Narrower than NoWaste, and simpler for it.

NeverToss — if the upkeep is why you're leaving

This one's ours, so read with that in mind. NeverToss makes the opposite bet from every app above. Instead of giving you better tools to maintain a list, it maintains the list for you. You scan your grocery receipt, and it works out what you bought, gives each item a shelf-life window, and tells you what to use first. Every date is an inferred estimate, the app is upfront about that, and a wrong guess takes one tap to fix.

It's iOS-only and in early access — the waitlist below is the way in. If NoWaste lost you at the upkeep, this is the version built for you.
